Charles Stanfield Oil/Canvas Landscape

We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist CHARLES STANFIELD, who has signed the painting C. Stanfield in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a tranquil landscape view of the calm waters of a river meandering its way between banks covered with wild flowers, some of which are shown in close up to the left foreground. This may well be a view in Yorkshire, although he is known to have painted scenes in the Highlands of Scotland.
CHARLES STANFIELD, who exhibited between 1882 and 1895, was a Yorkshire artist, who lived near Leeds until until 1890, but in Ilkley in 1895. He exhibited 8 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 9 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 2 at the Royal Academy and 1 at The Royal Oil Painters Institute. The two works at the Royal Academy were entitled 'A Sunny Day in October' and 'Farnham Common'. Other than this, very little is known about him, although according to Professor Dennic Child, who listed him in his book Painters of the Northern Counties of England and Wales, his work sells.
His short biography is also listed in The Dictionary of British Artists and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood. He does not appear to have been a very prolific artist, judging by his recent auction results, which may be found at artprice.com (12), artnet.com (3) and arcadja.com (2).
The painting is framed in a 2 1/2" ornate gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.
