We are offering for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist CHARLES W. OSWALD, who has signed the painting C.W. Oswald in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a Highland landscape at sunset, with three shaggy, highland cattle grazing on the banks of a loch, in the foreground. The sun is just about to set behind the tallest mountain in the background, but is still bathing some of the lower slopes with light.
We are also listing the companion painting to this one.
CHARLES W. OSWALD was born in Germany circa 1850, according to the Census record of 1891, which lists him living at 66 Barnes Street Everton, West Derby, Liverpool, aged 41, with his wife Jennie and a domestic servant. His birthplace is clearly listed as Germany. He was an artist who, though very prolific, exhibited very little. He specialised in highland landscapes, rural scenes and painting featuring cattle and and working horses painted in oils.
