Chinese Carved Camphor Wood Chest 1930s
A 1930s Chinese camphor wood chest finely carved with junks, pagoda and pine trees and raised on stepped bracket feet. The quality and subject matter of the relief carving on the top and front lifts this chest out of the ordinary. The top depicts a river scene with four junks in full sail with a pagoda, other buildings, rocks and pine trees lining the banks, all within a floral carved border. The scene is repeated on the front panel but the pagoda is absent. The back and narrow sides are more simply carved.
The lid lifts on an engraved brass hasp to reveal a spacious interior and a lift out tray. With its strong smell of camphor wood this chest would be an ideal box for storing woollen clothing or blankets at the foot of a bed or for storing toys etc in a living room or hall.
Dimensions: Width 102 x Depth 50 x Height 58 cm
Condition: Very good vintage condition with an attractive medium brown colour with some of the raised areas showing the natural colour of the camphor wood below the polish. There is a small chip at the back of the lid and a couple of fine splits in the lip of the lid but nothing to cause concern. Though the brass back plate and hasp are still present some of the lock on the base is missing preventing the use of a padlock.
