Chinese Carved Hardwood Laughing Buddha Lamp Base
A Very Good and Large Vintage Chinese Carved Laughing Buddha.
Designed as a lamp base (fittings not included) but equally as good as a sculpture in its own right.
This is a large and very well carved example with good modelling and excellent patina / colour.
The figure is seated in a gown and with smiling face. In his right hand he handles a rosary, in his left he cradles the base to a fly whisk, which loops over his shoulder.
The gown is embellished with metal inlay, fashioned into the form of clouds, medallions and a central shou character to the back.
Standing 36 cms tall this is an especially large and striking example.
Early 20th Century. One glass eye is absent and there is an age-related split to the base which runs up into the chest area....but the item is structurally sound.
