This is a charming Chinese watercolour on thin paper of two fishermen standing on narrow boats in a river while attended by a number of water birds, 19th century.

Our research suggests that this could be a rare antique image depicting the ancient Chinese tradition of fishing with cormorants. Fishermen use the natural fish-hunting instincts of the cormorants to catch fish, but a metal ring placed round the bird's neck prevents large, valuable fish from being swallowed. The fish are instead collected by the fisherman.

Condition: The painting is in good antique condition with a few old creases and some chipping and handling marks around the edges. It is currently attached at the top to thin card but would look fabulous framed (we suggest a simple cushion-top black frame.
