Here is an example of a very good quality antique Chippendale revival mahogany bureau bookcase, circa 1880. Designed in the style of the Chippendale period (between the years 1750 – 1790), this bureau has been constructed in the late Victorian period, circa 1880. The item features an intricately blind fretwork-protruding canopy. The twin astragal glazed cabinet doors open to reveal three internal adjustable shelves, the original hinges and the original working lock and a key. The interior of the cabinet has been lined in a light green damask fabric. Below, sits a very good quality bureau desk. The string-inlaid fall opens onto two vase-lined lopers, which supports the fall whilst in use. The interior consists of six shaped oak lined inlaid drawers. Above these are eight pigeonholes. Further above are two “secret” sliding tray drawers. To the centre of the desk is a small oval inlaid door, which features a small working lock and key. Flanking this, are two blind fretwork “secret” compartments, which are ideal for storing valuables! The interior of the bureau houses a dark green and gold tool leather. Further below, the bureau features a two-over-three graduated drawer layout. The drawers boast cock beaded drawer fronts along with the original brass swan neck handles and original brass escutcheons. The drawers are hand dovetailed and oak lined (a sign of quality). The corners of he bureau also features quarter reeded turned columns, which sits further blind fretwork above the original ogee bracket feet.
The bureau bookcase features a rich dark red and brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
The bureau would look superb in a variety of rooms from the office, living room or library. This item base would certainly grace any home. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
