Christopher Dresser Style Claret Jug Christopher Dresser
A glass and silver-plated claret or water jug made after a design by Christopher Dresser ca. 1880. Similar jugs were being manufactured by Hukin & Heath in Birmingham and James Dixon & Sons in Sheffield around this time and it is possible that this is an unmarked example of their work. Christopher Dresser was a pioneer of Victorian industrial design. His functional and mathematical design approach combined with his knowledge of Japanese art and manufacture created a distinctive style that has remained current and highly collectable for more than 130 years. This claret jug is a fine example of an iconic Dresser design. The star cut glass decanter is enclosed in a silver-plated frame which incorporates a vertical ebonised wooden handle. Detailing to the top of the jug indicates that the jug was destined for a quality table. The hinged lid is engraved with the monogram ‘HG’. Item No. 0036.
