A rare survivor a confederate D guard Bowie knife from the American civil war 1861-65. Bowie knives were popular with both union and confederate troops the soldiers from the north often carried English made knives while the confederate soldiers tended to have knives made by local craftsmen. This is just an example the knuckle guard is from a 1780 horseman’s sword made both in brass and steel. The grip horn and the blade hand forged it’s marked USSELLS improved? Not clear above a crest. As it came to us totally untouched a hand made blacksmith’s knife from the southern states.
