Cookes Finsbury Ltd Mahogany Pedestal Desk

Cooke's (Finsbury) Ltd were first established in London in 1885 and and produced quality antique furniture and cabinets for both the home and commercial interiors around the UK.
This solid desk is panelled and polished on all sides meaning it could stand in the centre of a room rather than against a wall. Fluted detail to the frame and raised on tapered legs, the desk features 6 drawers - the bottom drawer on the right hand side is double depth with a shaped divider for files. There are also a pair of useful pull out platform mahogany slides located under the desk top, to the left and right. The solid mahogany wood has an excellent colour and condition and the top of the desk features the original tooled leather skiver and all the original brass hardware is in place.
The maker’s label (Cooke's of Finsbury) is present in the centre drawer and all the original drawer locks are present and have been tested with the one key which works for all locks.
As you would expect with an antique of this age, there is some related wear and tear and this has been documented in the photographs. There is a historic repair to the bottom right of the double drawer on the righthand pedestal. There are a few knocks especially around the edges and to the legs and the original leather skiver shows wear but could easily be replaced. All wear is commensurate with use and adds to the appeal and character of this item. The desk has been lightly cleaned, waxed and polished and is ready for use.

History of the Partner Desk - Antiques World, April 2020:
"The Antique Partners Desk was first seen in the late Georgian period in Britain. It was designed for professionals with larger offices, like banks, solicitors and accountants. These new larger desks had a working bank of drawers and cupboards on both sides enabling two people to sit and work at them on either side comfortably and facing each other. Antique partners desks were real statement pieces and came with a generous sized knee hole, ideal to fit an office chair. These pieces of antique furniture were built for professional tradesmen or senior officials meaning they were high up in society. This meant they are usually constructed from superb quality timbers and no expense would have been spared in making them. Antique partners desks will also have high quality brass wear, along with leather tops and made from solid timbers such as Mahogany, Oak or Walnut. The quality and finish of these desks are superb, made to exacting standards. A modern equivalent would cost around £10 k to be made to a bespoke order."
