Cornelis W. Bouter 1888-1966 Dutch Oil Still Life

We are delighted to offer for sale a quite rare still life oil on canvas by the Dutch artist Cornelis Wouter Bouter, who has signed the painting by scratching out in the lower left hand corner, the signature of his pseudonym A. J. van Eijbergen. The painting depicts some objects on a table with a draped green cloth behind them and, to the right, a wall of Delft style tiles. There is a candle in a brass candlestick, an upright blue and white plate, an apple, a pottery jug and an open book. The artist has cleverly managed to show the light from the candle flame causing shadow to fall around the base of the candlestick and to illuminate the tiled backdrop the pages of the book and the other items.
Cornelis Wouter Bouter was a professional and prolific artist, who was born in Gouda in the Netherlands on the lst October, 1888. He lived and worked in The Hague until 1928, moved to Voorburg in 1928-1948, before returning the The Hague, where he died on 9th January, 1966. He was the brother of the painter Pieter Adrianus Bouter 1887-1968, and judging by the similarity of their landscape paintings, must have shared a studio at some time.
He painted scenes of Dutch domestic life, showing mothers and children in various interior and exterior settings, as well as typical landscapes of haymaking, milking, woodcutting, sheep and cattle in the fields and watering, as well as the odd townscape. He was a multi talented artist, as his landscapes, animal studies and figure paintings are very well executed, and his much rarer still life oils were finely painted. His paintings were much appreciated in the United States and Canada and hold their prices very well.
He utilised many pseudonyms, including Cornelis Verschuur, Carel Cornelis Verschuur, C. Willems, C. Hendriks, Willems Hendriks, C. van den Berg and A. J. van Eijbergen. He seems to have used A. J. van Eijbergen predominately for his still life paintings, although we have found the odd figure study and a few of the domestic scenes with this signature. He often used Cor. Bouter as a signature.
Some of the auction sites incorrectly attribute his van Eijbergen paintings to a Dutch lady by the name of Johanna Gerarda Theodora van Eybergen (1865-1950) who worked in metal in the Art Nouveau style in the Edwardian period and latterly worked as a drawing teacher. We think this is because his initials are difficult to read and the way he writes the Eij of his surname is often taken for Ey. She has a page on wikipedia and it does not mention that she painted and we can find no examples, whereas the work of A. J. van Eijbergen is exactly the same in execution and content as that of Cornelis Bouter and his other pseudonyms when he paints their subject matter. It is possible to see examples of A. J. Eijbergen's still life paintings on google images.
The painting is framed in a 3 3/4" swept gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 23 5/8" x 19 1/2" - 60cm x 49.5cm
Frame size: 31 1/2" x 27 1/2" - 80cm x 69.85cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The canvas is in good, clean, taut condition and there are no repairs, craquelure or missing paint. The frame is in very good condition, with a minor crack running around the edge of the raised inner edge of one of the corners, which is barely visible when hung. Please note that, as we can only show 6 photographs of the painting, we have not shown a picture of the back of the canvas as there is nothing to see, but a jpg is available on request.
