DRYAD ARCHITECTURAL IRONMONGERY - H117 DOOR PULLS - ROGER PEACH - 1963 - ULTRA SCARCE
A terrific run of 8 pairs of the 'H117' door push/pull handle, manufactured by the DRYAD Architectural Ironmongery company (aka DRYAD Metal Works Ltd).
The H117 handle was designed by Roger Peach and dates to 1963. He was the son of Harry Peach (1874 - 1936), who founded DRYAD right back in 1907.
Roger Peach's importance as a designer grew throughout the 50's and 60's. However interest peaked in 1959 when his K42R door handle won a Design Centre Award. This was a landmark event in design, as it was the first time that any item in that field had been recognised in that way. It provided world wide publicity and acclaim for him and the company.
Measuring an impressive 14 inches in length, the H117 handle is highly architectural in both size and style. It arose out of the post Festival of Britain climate of the 1950's, where people sought increasingly striking and avant-garde door antique furniture.
The H117 offered a strong and well cranked design for swing doors where the push/pull action is required. It is comfortable in use as a well rounded push pad and as a pull handle.
The handle was (according to an ex-employee of the company), quote "a devil to make", with many manufacturing issues and waste arising from the casting of the aluminium. However, not withstanding this, DRYAD continued to make the H117 to order, and, despite a costly price tag, the item sold purely on the strength of the design itself and its undoubted functionality.
Condition
In used, vintage condition. All have scratches of some kind and to varying degrees, which is now part of their history and patina. Some are very clean and polished, others are more worn. A couple have deeper scratches.
