E. W. Haslehurst RI RBA Watercolour Deer in Summer

We are delighted to offer for sale this large watercolour by the artist ERNEST WILLIAM HASLEHURST, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner with his correct name E. W. Haslehust, as shown. It is a great shame that all the reference books and auction sites refer to this artist as Haslehurst, when his actual name is Haslehust and this has been confirmed by a relative, as well as the artist's own spelling. We have put the incorrect spelling in the title, purely because this is how most people think his name is spelled.
We also understand that there is some controversy over his date of birth, as his obituary in The Times gave his year of birth as 1855, not 1866, as the reference books say, but 1866 is correct, confirmed by national records.
The painting depicts a path through woodland, with the trees in full summer leaf, touched by the sun. There are two stags and a hind on the path.
This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we are currently listing.
ERNEST WILLIAM HASLEHUST RI, RBA, RWA, RBC, was born in Walthamstow, educated at Felstead Grammar School in Dunmow in Essex and studied art at The Slade School under Legros and at University College London. He was a man of many interest, particularly all things scientific, as well as his first love of painting. He was a watercolour landscape painter and illustrator and, apart from being an exhibitor at Societies of which he was a Member, he was a regular exhibitor of watercolours at the Royal Academy. His exhibitions are as follows RA 18, RBA 217, RI 93, RID 4, L 3, GI 3.
In 1932, one of his watercolours was given place of honour in the watercolour section and was purchased by Newport Corporation for their public gallery. His works are also in public collections in Oldham, Bootle, Huddersfield, Lincoln, Sheffield, Swansea, Bristol, Port Elizabeth, Colombo, Vancouver and Auckland.
He was an elected Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, the Royal Society of British Artists, the West of England Academy and the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists. He was a member of the Langham Sketching Club and President of the Midland Sketch Club.
He designed landscape posters for the LNER and in 1932 had a one-man exhibition at the Greatorex Gallery. He contributed 60 illustrations in colour to a book on 'The Silvery Thames' and his paintings have been reporduced in the Illustrated London News, The Studio, The Tatler and many other magazines.
