Early 19th Century Georgian Mahogany Console

Early 19th Century Georgian Mahogany Console - Serving Table, W.Williamson & Sons, Guildford (1790-1840) Provenance Lord and Lady of Hall Place
This finely coloured and superb quality antique console, side or serving table stamped W.Williamson & Sons, Guildford dates to the early 19th Century George IV period circa 1820-1830. Having excellent provenance formerly belonging to Lord and Lady Sonja Hollenden and furnished their Grade II Listed Mansion at Hall Place, Leigh.
The solid mahogany top of splendid original colour and patina having a gadrooned carved edge above a fluted frieze retaining a blind frieze drawer stamped W. Williamson & Sons, Guildford raised on moulded chamfered legs with scrolled spandrels to each corner.
This is a rare and fine quality antique serving or side table which can also be used as a console table. The timber is a very choice cut of mahogany which has one of best natural colours and patina we have seen for a long time.
A delightful table stamped with an excellent provenance (as you can see below) in superb original condition having been gently wax burnished to retain the wonderful patination and colour to the top.
William Williamson & Sons were cabinet makers and upholsterers in Guildford, Surrey between 1790 to 1840. A number of high-quality pieces of stamped antique furniture have been recorded all of late George III or Regency form. The firm were based at Black Horse Lane from 1790-96 and Chapel Street from 1822-1840.
William Williamson & Sons of Guildford, Surrey are listed in G. Beard & C Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, page 983, as cabinetmakers and upholsterers 1790-1840
Provenance: Hall Place is a Victorian, Grade II listed mansion which stands proudly beside a magnificent lake and set in a former deer park, overlooking the village of Leigh.
The Hall Place estate dates back to 1600 and was granted by Henry V1, as part of the Penshurst Estate, to Humphrey Stafford, Duke of Buckingham. The estate was forfeited to the King when his son fought against Richard 111. Later in the 19th Century was purchased into the family (Hollenden) by Samuel Morley in 1870, for £42,000, with another £230 for the deer herd. At that time, a grand Elizabethan house was replaced with the George Devey designed Victorian building you see today, built in as little as two years. After that, the lake was created and house furnished predominantly by Jackson & Graham. In 1886 the estate was passed to Samuel Hope-Morley, following his father’s death who in turn was awarded the peerage of Lord Hollenden in 1912.
