Early 19th Century Henry Longcase Hindley of York
Early 19th century mahogany cased 8-day longcase clock. With strong kentish features and may have been built by Goulden of Canterbury. An ornately topped hood with brass finials, the arched door is flanked by wooden turned pilasters with capitals,
Brass dial with a silvered chapter ring, Roman numerals and five-minute Arabic’s, minute marks to the outer of the ring with subsidiary seconds dial, blued steel hands and female head pattern spandrels, silvered calendar dial to the break arch with sea creature spandrels, Four pillar rack striking movement. The movement is very well made and feature a much smaller escapement wheel than normally found on these types of clocks, striking the hours on a bell. With weights and pendulum.
Henry Hindley originally from Wigan (Lancs) is recorded as working in York from Petergate 1731-41 then Stonegate 1741-1771. A famous and highly innovative maker, often referred to as the “Tompion of the North.”
