Early 19th Century Naive Oil Of A Sea Captain Oil canvas
A rather evocative early 19th century naive oil of a sea captain. The naive school paintings of this period were truly symbolic with the background, and indeed what the sitter holds in their hands, telling us all we need to know of the sitter - except, perhaps, what we would like to know - who he was. The sailing ship in the background, and the telescope clasped in his hand, leave us in no doubt that this sitter was indeed a ship’s captain. The painting is untouched with some small areas of paint loss. Unframed.
