Early 20th C. Silver Plate 3 Piece Tea Set
This is a top quality and very elegant Early 20th Century Silver Plate Three Piece Tea Set. The set comprises of a family size teapot, a large sugar bowl and a milk jug. The pieces are octagonal with beaded top rims and a buckle motif on the handles. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea set was made in Birmingham by William Suckling Ltd as part of their Kingsway Plate range and dates to around the 1920s to 1930s. William Suckling founded his company in Birmingham in around 1895. They initially produced electroplated wares but in 1922 the firm registered their first mark at the Birmingham assay office to produce Sterling Silver items alongside their electroplate manufacturing. They produced a wide range of silverware for the table and general domestic use before they finally ceased trading in 1965.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot has a capacity of 1.28ltrs / 2.25pts. It is 28.3cm / 11.1ins from spout to handle, 12cm /4.7ins across and 16cm / 6.3ins high. The sugar bowl is 15cm / 5.9ins from handle to handle, 8cm / 3.1ins across and 10.3cm / 4ins high. The milk jug is 11.5cm / 4.5ins from lip to handle, 6.5cm / 2.5ins across and 11cm / 4.3ins high. All together the set weighs 1.26kg / 44.3oz.
The undersides of the bases are nice and clearly stamped with EPNS for silver plate, A1 for the best quality plating, S Ltd and the four point direction sign trademark for William Suckling Ltd and Kingsway Plate for the range.
