Early 20th C. Turkish Nalin Bath Clogs

Here we have a fabulous pair of Turkish Nalin Bath Clogs with silver overlay from the early part of the 20th century.
Nalin is the Turkish word for these wooden bathing clogs that were worn during traditional Turkish baths in the Ottoman period and the early days of the Turkish Republic. The high blocks under the heel and toes kept the feet clear of soapy, dirty water. Originally just plain wooden clogs, over a long period of time they became more ornate and had precious materials added to them to become status symbols, particularly for women. They are always identical straight clogs, not cut differently for left and right feet.
It became traditional for a pair of nalin to be presented to a bride by her groom on their wedding day or for a pair to be given to a newborn baby. Again the status of the family was reflected in the decoration and value of the clogs.
This early 20th century pair are definitely a presentation set as the wooden clog is covered in red velvet, which would obviously get spoilt in a bathing environment. With a beautifully decorated silver overlay these are high status nalin and would have been an expensive purchase when first made.
The clogs are 19cm / 7.5" long, 6.5cm / 2.5" wide and 9.5cm / 3.75" high. They come supplied in a red velvet covered box.
The clogs are in lovely condition and have probably never or hardly ever been worn. They are a small size so were most likely given as a present to a newborn baby, to be kept as a gift rather than worn.
