Early 20thC Cast Sphinx Stone Centre Table

The heavy quality cast stone centre table in three sections, with well-cast sphinx supports being half-maiden and half-winged lion, each section being cast in the round for intended central display with a plinth base and back also with cast decoration, the rectangular top with a gadrooned edge, and the whole surviving from the second quarter of twentieth century England.
There are a handful of old repairs to the wings and feet of the sphinx’s as photographed with some chipped losses to the plinth bases. The cast details are nicely weathered and softly worn.
Although most of us associated the Sphinx with Egyptian mythology, she was present in Greek mythology, as well. The Sphinx has its roots in Ancient Greece in Anatolia, in fact, and since archaeologists know that both the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Egyptians encountered each other in matters of trade, it makes sense that both cultures would have similar creatures, such as the Sphinx, in their lore. The particular design of these sphinx’s has been seen in late 18thc stone examples.
Quite probably a unique table that would have its significant presence felt in or out of the home.
