Early Victorian Desk Chair by Johnstone & Jeanes

An Early Victorian oak and leather desk chair by Johnstone & Jeanes, London.
This super looking desk chair is ornately carved in the high Victorian tastes of the period with linen fold type detailing to the backrest surround, scroll arms and gothic styled carved and turned supports to the arm rests and legs. The chair is stamped to the maker on the underside of the rail with the address of 67 New Bond Street. The chair has been reupholstered in a quality black buttoned leather.
The company of Johnstone & Jeanes began its history as Johntone, Jupe & Co when in March 1835 the pair invented the famous expanding circular Jupe table and traded from the famous New Bond Street address. The partnership was fairly short lived owing to a falling out between the pair in 1840 and Jupe separated the business and moved to Wellbeck Street in London. Johnstone latterly formed a new partnership and the company of johnstone & Jeanes was born and it continued to trade from the same address until 1880. Examples of the company’s work can be found in numerous important collections with examples of their work housed at the V&A and also at Buckingham Palace.
Circa 1850
