Edgar Flower 19th C. Watercolour Italian Doorway

We are offering for sale this excellent watercolour by the artist EDGAR FLOWER, who has signed the painting with his initials in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts the covered arched portico of an Italian building, with an inscription to Pope Pius IX and a coat of arms. The inner archway has paintings, and the half moon surface of the building inside the portico has religious paintings. The portico is supported by two columns. The building has a green painted panelled door, with a smaller opening door within it.
There is a priest sitting at the entrance and a woman, dressed in the traditional costume of the Roman region leaving the building carrying a basket. Unfortunately, after much research, we have been unable to discover the location of the building, but would suggest that it is in west central Italy by the costume of the lady.
Edgar Flower was a landscape painter, who exhibited a View of Tremezzo on Lake Como at Suffolk Street in 1890. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artist and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood. This is a very good architectural work and is totally evocative of the bright sunshine and faded stucco of the building.
Very little of his work has come to the market in recent years, but we have found a couple of listings for him.
The painting was purchased unframed and, therefore, it has been newly double mounted to complement and is framed in a 1 1/8" dull, mottled gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
