We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely Marine/Seascape oil on canvas by the German artist Edgar Freyberg, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner, as shown. The large painting (36 x 24 inch canvas) depicts a wave crashing on the rocks, with two more rollers following swiftly behind. The subject was much beloved by the artist, who studied the movement of the sea and sky in all its moods.

Edgar Freyberg was born on August 12, 1927 in Berlin. He studied under Hein Konig. He lived for most of his life on the island of Sylt on the coast of Germany's most northernmost state of Schleswig-Holstein. He has been deemed the most important 20th Century European marine painter.

Although based on Sylt, he spent his career working between the UK & the USA, searching for new subjects, which later expanded his body of work from the sea and sky, to include coastal views and shipping.

He died in February 2017 at the age of 89. His work is hung in the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg, Tallinn's Rios Gallery and the Otto-Pankok Museum.

The painting is framed in an attractive, 3 inch, swept gilt frame. It will be supplied with all new brass fittings, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Condition: Excellent. There is no damage to the paint surface or canvas, which is in clean taut condition. The frame is in very good condition with some minor cracking consistent with some age.
