Edward H. Thompson Large Watercolour R. Derwent Edward Horace Thompson 1879-1949 Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering this large, fine quality watercolour by the celebrated Lake District artist Edward Horace Thompson, signed in the lower left hand corner Edward H. Thompson, as shown.. The old backing board had a label giving the location of the watercolour as the River Derwent. The painting depicts a tranquil view of the river as it meanders through verdant banks on a bright sunny day. There are some flowers to the left bank, possibly irises at the water's edge.

The Derwent is a river in the county of Cumbria in the north of England it rises in the Lake District and flows northwards through two of its principal lakes, before turning sharply westward to enter the Irish Sea at Workington The name Derwent is shared with three other English rivers and is thought to be derived from a Celtic word for 'oak trees' (an alternative is dour water and (g)-went white / pure .

The river rises at Sprinkling Tarn underneath Scafell Pike and flows in a northerly direction through the valley of Borrowdale, before entering Derwentwater, which it exits to the north just outside Keswick and is joined by the waters of the River Greta. The Derwent then enters Bassenthwaite Lake at its southern end it exits it at its northern end, thereafter flowing generally westward to Cockermouth, where the River Cocker joins it from the south. William Wordsworth's childhood home in Cockermouth backed onto the Derwent, and he briefly mentions it in The Prelude:

... the bright blue river passed
along the terrace of our childhood walk
A tempting playmate whom we dearly loved)

From Cockermouth, the river continues westward past Papcastle, site of the Roman fort of Derventio, is joined by the River Marron near Bridgefoot and continues and onwards to Workington, where it flows into the Irish Sea.

The River Derwent was officially named by Sir Braelyn Smith in 1634 after he laid claim to the baronnies of Allerdale.

Edward Horace Thompson was born on 28th January, 1879 in Seaton, near Workington, Cumbria, the youngest of five children. His father worked in the Steel Works in Workington and Edward went to school in Workington until the age of 14. In his early teens he developed an interest in painting and spent every spare minute practising his art, with much encouragement from an art teacher. However, his parents didn't approve of art as a career as they thought it would be risky so Edward followed his father into the Steel Works, but into the office as a clerk, where he remained for the next 25 years, painting in his spare time. He started selling his paintings at the Steel Works and by word of mouth and one of his paintings was commissioned by the Managing Director of the Works, Sir John Randle, who paid £100 for the painting - a large sum in those days. Ted remained at the Steel Works until 1918 - his work there had kept him out of the forces as it was a reserved occupation - but he decided to become a professional artist.

In 1902, Edward married Sarah Mary Armstrong, born 1897, always known as Sally. They went on to have three daughters and a son, John, who sadly died in an accident whilst awaiting embarcation during WWII. The lived variously in Workington, Cockermouth, Eaglesfield near Cockermouth, Routenbeck and, finally, to the little Hamlet of Ruddings at the end of Bassenthwaite Lake. Here Ted created a large studio in what had been a Quaker Meeting House, where he produced his most prolific work.

Ted's early work was mostly in oils, landscapes, Lake District Scenes and coastal views of the sea and cliffs with crashing waves. However, his best work was in watercolours. He painted the scenes all around him of the Lake District, but also painted Scottish scenes of Lochs. It is often quoted that he used the pseudonym Donald A. Paton solely for the Scottish views, but this is not the case. He used the pseudonym (from about 1924) because it improved his sales to local people, because they felt that a local painter couldn't be much good.

As he became better known and more successful, the publishers Valentines of Dundee contact him to paint for them a series of postcards of Lake District scenes, followed by other scenic views some of which were based on photographs. In the 1940s, they produced calendars and booklets of his paintings. His last work for them was a series of 'chocolate box' country cottages executed in the year of his death.

He sold many of his paintings through local pubs and, along with many artists became known as a bit of a drinker. He also was a lifelong smoker and had a smoker's cough by the age of 40. His wife Sally died in 1947 and he followed her in 1949, dying in Keswick Cottage Hospital at the age of 70. Although his watercolours now achieve good prices at auction, he never received the recognition in his lifetime that he most surely deserved!
