Edward Hoyer Marine Oil Moonlight Escape Dtd. 1879 Edward P Hoyer Oil Painting on canvas Marine %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this very well executed Oil Painting on canvas by the 19th Century artist Edward Hoyer, who has signed the painting Edw. Hoyer in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1879. The painting depicts the sinking of a wooden hulled sailing vessel in the moonlight, while the crew are rowing away in the ship's lifeboat. The ship has been painted in meticulous detail.

Edward P. Hoyer and his brother Peter Julius Hoyer 1852-1877)were both marine painters, who painted in the late 19th Century and lived in East London. There is little known or can be found about their lives, except that Peter died of TB at the age of 24 in Mile End. His death was registered by his brother Edward P. Hoyer, who gave his occupation as marine painter, with an address in Bethnal Green. There is an Edward Hoyer who died in Poplar in 1881 and who was born in 1848, which is probably Edward P. Hoyer, but this cannot be verified. It would make sense that if his brother died of TB at a young age, it is possible that Edward died aged 33 of the same complaint. However, Christopher Wood, in his Dictionary of Victorian Painters, states that Edward Hoyer was active 1870-1890, which couldn't be true if he had died in 1881. Perhaps we will never know and we should like to thank the National Maritime Museum, who have paintings by both brothers, for the information that we have given above. Obviously we have confirmed the dates in the records, as well as checking the newspaper archives and found various advertisements mentioning the late Peter Hoyer and even more mentioning the marine paintings of Edward Hoyer.

Edward painted marines in oils and executed some very large works depicting the Bosphorus with shipping, which achieve very high prices. The record for one of his paintings of the Bosphorus is £39,886 in 2014. Often his paintings depict moonlight scenes. Considering his early death, he has left a reasonable body or work and there are 68 listings for his auction results on artprice.com, although many appear several times.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 3/4" reeded gilt frame, which suits it very well. It will be supplied with new brass D ring hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Image size: 19 1/2" x 11 1/2" - 49.55cm x 29.2cm

Frame size: 27" x 19" - 68.55cm x 48.2cm
