Edwardian Walnut Bureau Bookcase

Edwardian walnut bureau bookcase
This Edwardian walnut bureau bookcase was made circa 1910 using the design of the best George I example. The cabinetmaker would have taken drawings from an example seen in a museum or stately home.
In my opinion you couldn’t ask for better style or design. It has so many plus points in the feature this Edwardian walnut bureau bookcase carries.
It stands on the finest carved cabriole legs ending on claw and ball feet.
The dome shaped top with a break in the arch to give it a second tier. The wonderful acanthus carving to each side of the door below the cornice.
It has a stepped interior with pigeon holes, as well as an inset leather writing surface.
The drawers below the fall front are set around a kneehole.
The cabinetmaker also selected magnificent burr walnut veneer to place on the drawer fronts and the fall.
A bureau bookcase in this style is unlikely to be rivalled anywhere for sale.
It would have been ordered from a prestige retailer of the day, probably Harrods.
I find it charming to imagine how this would have been delivered in a removal wagon similar to the one illustrated, where the wagon driver and porters would transport this through the City into the wealthy suburbs to be placed in an important home.
