Edwards & Roberts Walnut Canterbury c. 1870

A very good Victorian walnut canterbury made by Edwards and Roberts of Wardour street, London with original trade label to base of drawer as follows:
Edwards & Roberts
Second Hand
Furnishing Warehouses
In modern and Antique Furniture
20 Wardour St and 7 &13 Chapel St. Oxford St, London
Very high quality and retaining original brass casters. In great condition throughout, the drawer with clean and substantial oak lining with finely dovetailed joints.
The three sections with multiple fine ring turned spindles and carved spiral supports and with original handles to drawer, carrying handles and original turned finials. Minor dings and marks, a few nibbles to the bases of the finials and along the dustboard below the drawer but not at all noticeable and entirely right for age and careful use.
Founded in 1845, Edwards and Roberts became synonymous with high quality furniture, both as cabinet makers - producing items of highest quality and using the finest timbers. In 1860 they had shops at 20 Wardour street and at 13 Chapel street. Later in 1871, their premises had expanded to include 21 Wardour Street, and in 1890 the company expands again and now occupies 148-160 Wardour Street and is using ivorine labels. The address in the paper label allow the canterbury to be accurately dated to between 1860 and 1871
Edwards & Roberts cabinet makers produced contemporary items as well as reproductions of earlier English and French pieces, favouring Georgian designs and satinwood marquetry.
By the late 19th century Edwards & Roberts was one of the leading firms of English cabinetmakers.
A really good walnut canterbury – all original - but this renowned London cabinet maker and in excellent condition making it a useful and attractive chair side store for your books and magazines.
Dimensions are:
27 inches wide, 16 inches deep and 21 inches high (all max).
The inner (usable) height of the drawer is 2 inches. I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
