A fine quality inlaid rosewood writing desk by Edwards and Roberts of London. Dating from the late Victorian period and of fine construction in rosewood and attractive rosewood veneers onto a solid mahogany carcas. Decorated with satinwood banding and fine foliate inlaid motifs throughout, including, urns, swags and harebells all with pen and ink work detailing. The superstructure with a brass gallery and a series of 6 small stationary drawers. The desk with a sumptuous black leather writing surface with gilt tooled decoration. There is an arrangement of 2 pairs of 3 short drawers flanking a central long drawer (lockable with key supplied). All standing on square tapering legs with spade feet terminating in their original caps and castors. Sympathetically refinished in our workshops and now offered for sale in excellent condition, with a wonderful colour and patina, ready to go straight into the home or office.

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier antique furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
