Emmenologia. A Study of Women's Menstruation 1752
John Freind: (Translated from latin to English by Thomas Dale).
Emmenologia. (A Study of Women's Menstruation).
Pub T. Lamb. At the Lamb, Cornhill, London. 1752 2nd edition.
216 pages + 6 page index and 16 pages of prelims and dedicatory and advert leaf for T. Cox, printed on verso and a two page advert leaf at the end. hand-made rag paper all clean and tight and feeling fresh. the original early 18th century calf is worn with front hinge stringing visible a one edge, half-raised bands on spine, no labels or titles as more common in this period. Small octavo. Very good. NOTE: The author was born in Northampton, he was Queen Caroline's physician from 1726, a post he held until his death. He had served time in the Tower for alleged sympathy to the Stuart Cause. His work on "The History of Physic" is still one of the classic works consulted until very recently and written in 1725. He travelled to Spain and accompanied and helped the soldiers in the war there. Became a member of the Royal College of Physicians. This work shows that the upright posture of the human is the cause for the menstruation in women and that the blood flowing through the umbilical cord is sufficient to nourish and grow a child in the womb. He specialised in Women's physical ailments.
