English Arts & Crafts Stool c.1915.

Delightful little English Arts and Crafts stool by the celebrated Cumbrian designer and craftsman Arthur Simpson of Kendal c.1915. Oak frame with tapering legs, chamfered corners at the feet. With original plaited leather seat of dished or concave shape reminiscent of the famous Liberty & Co. Thebes stool. No maker’s label to this one unfortunately but it’s a well known Simpson design (link here to one we had in January 2015) Excellent condition.
Arthur Simpson (1857 – 1922) having served as an apprentice at Gillows in Lancaster returned to his native Kedal to open his first workshop in 1881. Whilst undertaking several ecclesiastical commissions he also produced a range of smaller domestic antique furniture of traditional form and in 1889 had his first piece accepted into the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition. Following this his work followed a more deliberate Arts & Crafts direction, perhaps under the influence of his close friend the great Arts & Crafts architect C.F.A. Voysey. Voysey designed a house in Kendal for Simpson who in turn executed several furniture commissions for his friend. Simpson’s best work is celebrated for the purity of its forms and the quality of its materials and manufacture.
