English Birdseye Maple Writing Slope / Lap Desk

A wonderful and unusual Victorian writing slope or lap desk, what makes it unusual is the timber used, a wonderful Birdseye Maple with it's rich toffee colour and tight curly grain.
The front and top is beautifully inlaid with fan motifs, typical of the late Victorian era, around 1890.
The lid opens to reveal the original rich Burgundy coloured writing surface with gold embossing. There are two period brass topped inkwells, one slightly smaller than the other, in the middle is a removable pen tray with storage below. The underside of the pen tray reveals the label of London retailer.
The divider between the right-hand side inkwell and the sloped stamp holder is pulled upward to release the sprung panel on the inside to reveal the two secret drawers.
Complete with a working key, the box remains in excellent condition. 13 3/4" x 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" while closed. Pen and stationery not included.
