English Fusee 'Drum' Dial Clock in a Rosewood Case

A well preserved example of a good quality dial clock signed L. Morris, Islington.
The substantial, 8 day duration, chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and unusual arched-top plates and a regulator style pendulum bob.
Behind a 12" diameter, painted iron flat dial with an outer divided minute track with triangular hour marks, Roman hour numerals and the centre boldly displaying the maker's signature of "L. MORRIS. 265 UPPER ST. ISLINGTON". Also having 'open moon' style matching blued steel hands. Under a cast brass hinged bezel with sight ring and thick bevelled flat glass.
In a well-figured and very well laid rosewood veneered oak 'Drum' case with locking and cockbeaded doors to the bottom for regulation and the left side for access to the bezel release. If the doors are locked, the clock cannot be tampered with!
Little is known about the maker other than he is listed as working in c.1875. The movement is of above average quality in having a chain fusee, being substantially made and also having arched tops to the plates - this practice was usually employed by the finer makers such as Barwise. Features of the movement typically tie in with methods used in the latter part of the 19th century.

Condition The movement has been well maintained throughout its life and is in good working order. The case and dial are unrestored but in very good condition. There is slight fading to the rosewood drum in some areas and minor cracks in the veneer also, the lower keyhole escutcheon has a piece missing but in my opinion, not requiring repair nor a repolish as the finish and colour is still very good (please refer to the photographs). The locks are original and working correctly and generally the whole clock is in good, sound condition. The movement would benefit from a light clean but apart from that, I would advise leaving the rest because it really is all in such good condition.
