English School Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Lady
The well rendered three-quarter length depiction in oils on canvas of a middle-aged lady of a neutral contemplative expression in a dark blouse with white under garment, wearing a gold drop earring and albert chain, seated on a ruby upholstered chair on a deep sea green ground, the work surviving from the middle of the nineteenth century and presented in its original carved & gilt painted gesso frame.
Although the canvas has very obvious craquelure throughout (possibly due to being hung over a fire-place) to its surface, the quality of the painting is accomplished. The obvious flawed but evocative condition of the picture, in this case, is its attraction, decoratively and it has a real time-worn aura to it. The gesso frame is original to the picture and has losses to the extremities to several places.
This picture is very suggestive of its age and life thus far without it going too far and totally compromising the work as a whole, and it is also immensely redolent of haunted, abandoned country houses. This is something to treasure.
