English Silver & Tortoiseshell Topped Inkwell


A fabulous cut Crystal Inkwell with a highly decorative hobnail cut base.
The fitted collar and hinged lid is made from English sterling silver with a full hallmark for Birmingham 1919 together with the makers initials for the well renowned silversmith, Henry Matthews.
The top is inset with a square period tablet of polished Tortoise Shell with lovely markings and colours ranging from golden champagne to rich chocolate brown. The shell is inlaid with an intricate silver pique inlay in the form of foliate wreath tied with ribbons and bows.
The inside is fitted with a glass liner for easy refilling and cleaning.
Excellent condition with a minuscule sliver imperfect at the back below the hinge, mentioned and shown purely for accuracy. 2 1/2" cube.
