English Wedgwood Platter Famous US Naval Battle 1960s
In General
A beautiful large Wedgwood black and white transferware platter commemorating the famous naval battle of 29th December 1812 off the coast of Brazil between the American 3 mast frigate USS Constitution and the British 38 gun fifth rate frigate Java during the War of 1812 between the United States and her allies and Great Britain and her allies. The Java surrendered to the Constitution after both ships were damaged and was sunk the day after the battle after the transfer of all on board. America won the 1812 war against incredible odds (the British Royal Navy being the world’s strongest at that time with 600 ships against America’s 20) and the successes of the USS Constitution played a central role.
This plate was made by Wedgwood for American Heritage which is the oldest and a most respected magazine on American history. It has been printed since 1949 and has been connecting Americans with their rich cultural history since then. The Wedgwood logo had already been altered in 1891 to add the word “Made in England” to allow for customs regulations and exports to the United States where this plate was designed to be sold.
The plate is designed from a 1938 print by George C. Wall and has a central scene featuring the part of the battle where the Constitution hauled off to make repairs to her badly cut rigging, together with a star and rope border and the very recognisable eagle emblem of American Heritage. It is believed the plate was designed in 1968.
Interestingly, the USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship of any type still afloat (Guinness Book of World Records) and remains on the US Navy ship roster with a crew of between 50 and 80 active duty Navy sailors. She was originally built in 1797 and has accordingly been in the water for over 200 years. She is currently docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston. She was very large and fast for a frigate and was very strongly built. She is famously known as “Old Ironsides” because earlier in the 1812 war when she engaged with the British frigate Guerriere and British 18 inch cannon balls were seen to bounce harmlessly off her hull, a British seaman was alleged to have exclaimed: “Huzza her sides are made of iron!”. They weren’t of course but they were made from American oak which was denser than British oak and this together with the fact that the ribs on the side were only four inches apart rather than the usual eight to ten inches made the ship extremely strong and a formidable adversary.

In excellent antique condition with no chips or crazing. There are some barely visible scratches as photographed. There is a "dink" on the rear of the platter from the production process. The stars on the border fade towards the centre of the platter which is part of the design and not wear/rubbing. Please see photographs.
