Etching of Haughton Nottinghamshire Johannes Kip

This etching by Johannes Kip originally appeared in Britannia Illustrata which was one of the most important topographical publications of the eighteenth century.
In the late 1690's Leonard Knyff had come up with an idea for a ‘subscription publishing project’.
His idea was to play to the vanity of the British aristocracy, and produce a set of images of English country estates, funding the scheme by signing up the landowners in advance.
The birds-eye view format, which was popularised in the UK by Knyff, is thought to have first been introduced to the British landscape tradition by his brother, Jacob.
For his £10 subscription each gentleman would have his house and grounds engraved including his coat of arms as part of the design and ultimately a full set of all the other prints
This fine etching was first published in 1707 and displays:
"Haughton in the County of Nottingham one of the Seats of the most Noble and Mighty Prince John Duke of Newcastle, Marquis and Earle of Clare, Baron Haughton of Haughton, Lord Lt of ye County of Nottingham and of the Town and County of the Town of Nottingham, Ld Warden of the Forest of Shirwood and Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter"
An amazing historical print showing the property of Prince John, Duke of Newcastle.
Sadly the property no longer exists, dating from around 1500 the property was abandoned in around 1691.
The 4th and last earl of Clare married the coheiress of H. Cavendish, duke of Newcastle, and was himself, after the death of his father-in-law, in 1691, created duke by that title his own estate, and the Cavendish together, amounting to 40,0001. per annum.
Haughton, upon the acquisition of these estates, was probably neglected, if not already in ruins, and the duke thence resided at Welbeck Abbey.
All that remains within the area is a chapel and or school house which is derelict.
Our research regarding this print has amassed some very interesting results which can be emailed to the purchaser if required.
