Exceptional Marquetry Longcase Clock - Gould christopher Gould marquetry longcase %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an opportunity to acquire an exceptional marquetry antique clock by the most eminent of English makers Christopher Gould who was made a Free Brother in the Clockmakers' Company in 1682. In 1697 he signed the Clockmakers' Company oath of allegiance. In 1701 he worked near the east corner of the Royal Exchange. He was Beadle of the Company in 1713 but by then was receiving a charity pension which continued until his death in 1718. This clock will date circa 1690
His work is always of the highest standards which is comparable to that of his contemporaries such as Tompion , Fromanteel and Graham. They are inevitably in museums , Country houses and serious private collections but this clock is fresh to the market having been sourced privately in central Europe
The 11 inch square brass dial has a well matted and engraved dial centre with subsidiary dials for seconds and date. The dial sheet is line engraved with decoration between the well cast and fettled spandrels . On the bottom edge it is signed Chris Gould Londini Fecit .
The fine quality 8 day duration weight driven movement has five finned pillars and outside count wheel striking which strikes each hour on a bell. The collects are domed and the clock has bolt and shutter maintaining power which provides power to the clock whilst it is being wound which aids the accuracy of the antique clock. It is operated by pulling a cord which opens the shutters to reveal the winding holes . After a few seconds the shutters automatically close. It has flat topped brass cased weights and a brass faced domed pendulum bob.
The case is constructed in English oak and marquetry veneered with panelled birds and flowers to the front and highly figured walnut panels to the side . The sides of the case reach almost to the floor and the base is original with the exception of the (always ) replaced bun feet . It has a bulls eye lenticle in the door which allows the clock to be seen functioning. The hood has barley twist pillars front and rear and there are glazed apertures in the side so that the movement can be seen.
I have included plenty of images which should accurately represent the clock but , as always , I would suggest a personal viewing or any expert appraisal to see how nice this clock is in the flesh.
The size and proportions are perfect and the clock looks like a 10 inch example on first sight. It is 6 ft 9 inches tall,.the trunk is only 11 1/2 inches wide and the door 43 inches in length . The base is 14 1/2 inches wide and the maximum depth is 9 1/2 inches. The widest part of the clock , measured across the top moulding is 19 inches.
This clock has been expertly and sympathetically renovated the the very highest standards and will delight the most discerning of clients. The colour and finish is exemplorary.
At the full asking price I will deliver and set up the clock free of charge in England , Wales and the Scottish Lowlands. A three year guarantee will be provided under these circumstances.
If a lesser offer is accepted the transaction will be considered a trade sale with the clock sold as described and the delivery / collection costs the responsibility of the buyer.
