Fine English Boulle Inkstand c.1890

A fine quality inkstand, Victorian in era, around 1880. The stand is made from exotic and expensive Rosewood and smothered in period Tortoise Shell inlaid with polished cut brass, collectively known as Boulle. The front and back have troughs made for pens. Either side of the inkwell is a lidded compartment for pen nibs, sealing wax or other desk-top accouterments.
The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.
The central cut crystal inkwell has a beautifully hobnail cut on the underside. The polished brass collar and hinge supports the square domed lid made from Rosewood and again decorated in Boulle.
The stand measures 9" x 7" x 4" to the top of inkwell. The inkwell itself has a measurement of 2 1/4" square x 3" tall. A magnificent example.
