Fine Mahogany French Empire Marble Topped Gueridon
A fine early 19th century French Empire mahogany Gueridon with a circular dished ‘Gris St.Anne’ marble top.
French Empire Period, Circa 1810.
The choice cut of “Gris Saint Anne’ marble set upon a mahogany veneered and moulded edge circular frieze, above a pyramid shaped base having concave sides supported by three finely carved swans. The whole being raised on a mahogany plinth with turned feet and recessed castors.
In excellent original condition having a fine colour and patina, the marble being of the one best possible cuts of its type.
This example is a classic design of the Empire period having the carved swans which is found in the design of Empire antique furniture. It relates to the story of Leda and the Swan in Greek mythology where the God Zeus transformed into a swan in order to seduce Leda so to bear his children. Empress Josephine was fascinated by these birds having several species at Malmaison.
Gris St.Anne Marble is a dark grey marble with white and light grey markings. It is quarried mainly in Belgium at Gougnies near Charleroi and at Biesme, Namur.
