Fine Month Marquetry Longcase Grandfather Clock-
This is a fine and rare marquetry long case of month duration by Michael Bird (2) of London circa 1700 . He was apprenticed to his father Michael (1) in 1672 and became a Free Brother of the Clockmakers Company in 1683.
The 12 inch square brass chapter ring and spandrel dial has a well matted and engraved centre with a small date aperture above 6 o'clock and a subsidiary seconds dial below 12 o'clock .The cherubs head spandrels have decorative engraving between them. The winding holes are ringed and the makers name is engraved on the chapter ring.
The fine quality weight driven of one month duration has five finned and knopped pillars and strikes the hours on a bell which is controlled by an outside count wheel . It has been expertly serviced by Overton Clocks of Chesterfield and is in perfect working order.
The magnificent case has a carcase of English oak and veneered in walnut and arabesque marquetry . The sides have walnut panels and a glazed sight aperture to the sides of the case. The images can show much more than a lengthy description in words but suffice to say that it in remarkable condition for an item which is over 300 years of age having been renovated by a 78 year old Master Craftsman . It will delight the most discerning client . Interested parties are encouraged to view the antique clock as it is actually better in the flesh
