Fine pair of watercolours by F.W. Hattersley Pair watercolours landscape %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A wonderful quality pair of watercolours by Frederick William Hattersley born 1859. The works are both titled on the frame ‘The Village Carrier’ and ‘Gypsies preparing to move on’. The watercolours are typical in style and subject for this interesting and unusual artist. He worked in a sketchy and illustrative manner with use of broad colour washes. The pair are both in very good untouched condition with only the odd minor mark. Frederick William Hattersley was born in Sheffield in 1859 his father was a stove and fender manufacturer in the city. The family appears to have diversified and by the 1880’s he is listed as a carver and gilder. By 1896 he was recorded in the local trade directories as an artist. Hattersley was an extremely talented watercolourist of landscapes and beach scenes and while he is little recorded because he did not exhibit in London he is widely admired and collected. Frederick appears to have had no formal training and this probably explains his distinctive style. While he is little recorded, he did exhibit with the Sheffield Society of Artists between 1870-1890 and Sheffield Museums hold at least six local views by him. These works are in the original fine quality gilt frames with original gilding and are in excellent condition with some minor repairs, they also retain the original titles. The pair are great examples of this interesting artist’s work with a wonderful sense of the romance of the rural landscape as well as hugely decorative frames and mounts. C.1890.
