Fine Quality Japanese Porcelain Butterfly Vases

A Stunning Pair of Antique Japanese 'Butterfly and Moths' Vases
Imperfect but still stunning and fantastic for display is this LARGE and imposing pair of porcelain vases. Brilliantly decorated with richly gilded and enamelled butterflies and moths in flight over a wonderfully soft and muted ground. The contrast of the reeds and insects painted over the high-gloss, earthy coloured glaze is just terrific.
These were difficult to shoot and I do not believe the photos do them justice.
Dating to the late 19th Century, at some point these most elegant vases were drilled close to their bases and so converted to lamps. These could be filled and restored, or they could be rewired and used as lamps. Either way they are lovely objects and a most unusual find.
Both bear six character marks to the bases, painted in underglaze cobalt blue.
Please read 'condition' below and request further images prior to purchase - I shall be happy to supply them.
Dimensions -
Approx 36.5 cms tall.
Condition -
With faults. Both vases have been drilled near to the bases, as shown, from where they were historically converted to lamps. One vase also has a chip and fault to the upper rim. A few surface blemishes here and there. One vase has a very fine hairline but this is practically invisible and I couldn't get it to show in the photos.
