Fishing Cobble by Robert Jobling

24"x36", oil on canvas, signed in gilt frame
Robert Jobbing (1841 - 1923). Marine, landscape and figure painter in oil and watercolour. Born in Newcastle, the son of glassmaker employed in the glassworks of Sir Matthew White Ridley & Co. His first job was alongside his father where he remained until the age of 16. He then went on to become a ship painter, attending the art classes of the Government School of Design in his spare time. He did progress to a foreman on the shipyard before deciding to become a full time artist. The date at which he decided to this is unknown however, he was exhibiting by 1866. He exhibited at several important local exhibitions over the next few years including the exhibition of local painters at the Central Exchange Art Gallery and the first exhibition at the Arts Association. By 1883 he had his own studio in Shakespeare St, Newcastle and in this year sent his works to the Royal Academy and the Suffolk St Gallery. He remained at this studio for more than 11 years. Later moving to the old Academy of Art building on Blackett St. where he stayed until 3 years prior to his death. He began painting at his home in Whitley Bay.
