Framed 18th/19th Century Sampler by Emma Goddard

A fine late 18th century or early 19th century needlework sampler by Emma Goddard in an antique bird's eye maple frame. It is a wonderfully naïve depiction of a church with a garden containing trees, birds and a dog (at top), and a naked Adam and Eve either side of an apple tree with a snake coiled around the trunk and animals (dogs?) looking on (at bottom). These two scenes are separated by a poem across four lines: 'The religion that can give, Sweetest pleasures while we live, the religion must supply, solid comfort when we die', with the young maker's name in larger letters below: 'Emma Goddard'. A cornucopia of flowers and a crown flank the verse.
