Interesting framed whale bone scrimshaw picture, c1800.The scrimshaw picture is very well composed and executed and depicts a 3 masted sailing ship displaying an English flag .There is an inscription at the bottom \'The Amphion\'. This is a reference to the classical Greek hero and there have been a number of famous ships named Amphion. The rear of the picture is covered in paper which is covered in writing . Unfortunately I cannot make out the script other than the odd word as it has faded and is ripped in places. I am not sure what the frame is made from , it is not wood and it appears to be something similar to slate? The colour/patina is good and clearly shows age. Overall condition is in line with age and use. There have been several repairs to the frame and small losses around the edge. The picture is not currently fixed in the frame (easily rectified).
