We are very pleased to offer for sale this wonderfully evocative oil on canvas by the Swiss artist FRANCOIS GAY, who signed the painting in the lower left hand corner, dated it 2002 verso on the stretcher and entitled it "Regard de jeis". We have been unable to translate the title. The painting depicts a young woman, who is nude to the waist, whose denim dress has been pulled down. Her long hair is put up in a somewhat messy style, but evocative of the period and she is wearing quite a lot of make-up. This is a wonderful painting and the artist has really caught the character of his model.

Unfortunately, other than the fact that he is Swiss and born in 1940, we have been unable to discover much biographical information about this artist, as our reference books only cover up to 1940. However, he is listed on 3 of the major art auction sites and should not be confused with the American artist August-Francois P. Gay.

There are 7 listings for him on artprice.com, 5 on findartinfo.com and 3 on arcadja.com. In 2004, one of his oil paintings achieved $2,544 in Switzerland.

The painting has been newly framed in a 1 1/2" black frame, which suits in perfectly. It is ready to hang.
