Frederick Golden Short (British, 1863-1936) - Wood

A stunning oil on canvas by Frederick Golden Short (1863-1936) depicting a clearing within a woodland. Signed to the lower left.
Frederick Golden Short was a British painter, who specialised in landscapes. Short was born in Lyndhurst, situated in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire. Growing up in such close proximity to the New Forest, this is a common subject of his paintings. Short worked primarily with oils, and occasionally watercolour.
Short exhibited at the leading galleries of the time, including The Royal Academy of Arts, The Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the New Gallery. Today his art is widely collected and is held in collections such as Astley Hall Museum and Art Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, and many more.
This work is an excellent example of Short's ability to paint nature the hazy blue of the sky and the way the light falls within the clearing are all brilliantly executed. The foliage is skilfully depicted with confident strokes with the central path drawing the eye into the distance. The work is housed in a gilt frame.
The work itself remains in a good condition throughout. The frame is a little ill fitting to the edges and has some light marking in areas.
