French C19th Diehl Paris Liqueur Decanter Box


Beautiful inlaid rosewood decanter box, manufactured by Diehl the renowned Paris maker in the second half of the 19th century. Complete with four hand-painted, gilded and enamelled liqueur decanters and sixteen hand-painted, gilded and enamelled liqueur glasses fitted into an ormolu mounted rosewood tray. Brass engraved inlaid cartouche on top of box with initials. Additional photographs available on request. 35cm wide, 28cm deep, 25cm high. Glasses each 7.5cm high. Decanters 21cm high including stopper.
Gilding and enamelling on the glasses and decanters is in excellent condition. Some minor wear. Two glasses have very minor fleabites on gilt rims, one glass has sign of stem being repaired and one glass is a replacement of the period but slightly larger. Charles-Guillaume Diehl (1811-1885) - a highly prestigious 19th century maker of boxes and cases as well as small antique furniture, famous for producing exceptional designs. Born in Germany, Diehl moved to Paris in 1840, achieving success at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London and subsequent international exhibitions with a reputation for high quality unique pieces. Diehl employed over 600 craftsmen working in the Rue Saint-Sebastien, with retail premises in Rue Michel le Comte between 1853 and 1885. Diehl's work was popular with Parisian and international elite clientele and examples are found in important collections including international museums and institutions.
