French Country Oak 19thC Sidetable/Stool

A pretty little piece of antique furniture that has generated some debate with ourselves.
The facts...purchased in France, solid oak, country made circa mid 19th century with a lovely warm colour to the wood.
The theories.... Is this a side table or a stool? One idea is an artists stool that should have a loose cushion within the framed top. The wear to the bottom rail from resting feet support this. The other a side table that would make a great addition to any room as a lamp table or bedside table. Or is it a side table that has been used wrongly as a stool! Whatever the answer this is a characterful piece of unique antique furniture.
Another theory has been suggested to us.....a street cobblers table.
