French Ebony Tea Caddy with Boulle and Tortoiseshe

A fabulous French, ebonised Tea Caddy in rectangular form, with tortoiseshell and boulle work within the lid. Circa 1860.
This splendid ornament dates back to when tea was an expensive luxury for most, due to its need to be imported from other countries to mainland Europe. From the 18th century, locking one's supply away was common practice, so Tea Caddies became popular with those who could afford to purchase this exotic drink.
This example features a very ornate boulle inlay design, surrounded by tortoiseshell, finished with a monogrammed initial in a central cartouche (MV).
The intricate design also features around the keyhole on the front of the box, whereby the original key still works the lock to reveal a rosewood veneer interior and two separate tea compartments under the lid.
