Description:
This is a fine quality vintage French Neo-Classical / Empire design brass coffee table, in the style of Maison Jansen, constructed with a rectangular brass frame and a smoked glass top, circa 1960, in excellent original condition. The top consists of a 5mm thick piece of polished edge smoked glass, inset within a brass angular frame, raised on four fine fluted turned legs and baluster sections, terminating on elegant circular pad feet. The brass legs are united by a symmetrical demi-lune cross stretcher, united with a small ball finial. The Georgian style brass coffee table displays a lovely mellow aged finish to the brass frame. This brass coffee table is very well constructed and heavy to list, which is always a sign of quality. If you want the glass top replacing for a new clear glass top (as opposed to smoked), please contact us for a quote.
This brass coffee table is a timeless piece and would suit either a traditional or contemporary setting. The brass coffee table would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don't miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
History of Neoclassical Architecture & Furniture:
Furniture design during the 18th and early 19th century was heavily inspired by Greek architecture and became one of the most prominent architectural styles in the Western world and this was reflected in the design of antique furniture during this period. The prevailing styles of architecture in most of Europe for the previous two centuries, Renaissance architecture and Baroque architecture, already represented partial revivals of the Classical architecture of ancient Rome and ancient Greek architecture, but the Neoclassical movement aimed to strip away the excesses of Late Baroque and return to a purer, more complete, and more authentic classical style, adapted to modern purposes.
