French Slate and Marble Striking Mantel Clock 1860
Hugely impressive polished black slate / rouge marble striking mantel antique clock of outstanding workmanship, by world-famous French clockmakers Japy Frères and Co. of Paris.
The antique clocks breakfront stepped slate case is embellished with variegated rouge marble to the sides and plinth. The fabulously eye-catching blue enamel and mottled brass chapter ring has an enclosed recessed centre containing its visible jewelled Brocot escapement, surrounded by raised enamel Roman numerals. The dial is then finished with an original pair of brass Spade hands, secured by a pinned collet, all protected by a thick bevelled glaze mounted in its moulded brass bezel.
The clock has a high-quality, Japy Frères circular 8-day pendulum driven movement, accessed via its rear hinged bevelled glazed door (also mounted in a brass bezel). The backplate is stamped with a serial number, together with the Japy Frères et Cie 'Grande Medaille d’Honneur' Exposition 1855’ trademark, helping to date the antique clock. The movement strikes the hours and half-hours on its nickel ‘ting bell’ and comes with an authentic French pendulum and winding key.
…A well-proportioned and truly eye-caching French mantel clock of the highest order!
